The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an exciting career opportunity for a General Engineer position in the Spokane Mining Research Division. The person in this role will be responsible for conducting mining and ground control research with a group of multidisciplinary researchers on the Geomechanics Team. The team focuses on reducing geomechanical hazards to mine workers through applied laboratory and field research.

The Spokane Mining Research Division is part of the NIOSH Mining Program. The Program serves as the focal point for miner safety and health research at NIOSH. Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research General Engineer will carry out the duties and responsibilities outlined below:

• Design, initiate, and conduct basic and applied research related to health and safety issues in various occupational safety and health activities.
• Design control strategies for dealing with occupational exposures.
• Conduct reviews of existing literature and data of research projects and studies.
• Prepare and present summaries to leadership and other members stakeholders.
• Design questionnaires and other data collection instruments.
• Develop plans for data analysis.
• Select and apply statistical methods for the analysis of occupational worker injury and illness data.
• Provide scientific advice and technical assistance to researchers within various public, private and/or nonprofit health and/or health-related agencies and organizations.
• Provide advice and assistance in the development and implementation of procedures, methods, and strategies for obtaining and using research data.
• Provide scientific consultative services to assist in the development of novel occupational safety and health prevention research methods.

Basic Qualifications:

A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-0801-11:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level of in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience applying engineering skills to conduct small or routine laboratory experiments or field studies related to mining health and safety.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree

Minimum Qualifications for GS-0801-12:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level of in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience applying engineering skills to lead and conduct laboratory experiments or field studies related to mining health and safety.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

Documenting Experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record.
