The City of Austin Transportation Department (ATD) is seeking an innovative person to supervise and lead one of our engineering operations groups as an Area Engineer within the Transportation Engineering Division. This is an exciting opportunity to implement national best-practice in transportation engineering to improve safety and mobility for all users.
The ideal candidate is proficient in transportation engineering operation and safety, has an in-depth understanding of local and national engineering best practices, is comfortable with flexibility, can work in a bustling work environment, and can effectively communicate with the public and elected officials. This position requires simultaneously managing multiple projects and the ability to shift from one project to another without sacrificing quality. It will benefit this person to have this knowledge, but at a minimum the candidate should have a strong desire to learn and absorb this information.
Under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, this position will perform highly complex engineering functions that include implementing traffic control devices, designing transportation system improvements, and responding to customer service requests in the Transportation Engineering Division on behalf of the Austin Transportation Department (ATD).
This position will lead the following duties:
- Supervision: oversee workload for team members; assist with the resolution of the more challenging transportation engineering issues and requests; train, discipline, and develop employees; review performances.
- Public Interface: represent ATD at public project and neighborhood meetings; respond to these stakeholders in written and verbal communication.
- Engineering Operations: oversee customer service requests; lead engineering studies; provide technical assistance to other ATD divisions and City of Austin departments.
- Engineering Programs: design and review projects for bond initiatives and programs (Intersection Safety, Corridor Mobility, Safe Routes to School, Speed Management, Transit Enhancement, Pedestrian Crossings, etc.)
- Development Review: review transportation impact analyses, license agreements, public easement releases, and ROW vacations.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a versatile engineer and supervisor, bringing the following preferred qualifications to transportation safety projects to accommodate all users:
- Proficiency in transportation engineering fundamentals: respond to residents’ transportation concerns; develop appropriate solutions utilizing established engineering guidelines; conduct transportation engineering studies.
- Proficiency in team working and problem-solving skills with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.
- Ability to make decisions in conformance with established practices.
- Ability to provide technical input and strategic direction to multiple work teams by coordinating across ATD divisions, other departments, contractors, external stakeholders, and partner agencies.
- Skill in effective written and verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders, including meetings and public events.
- Skill in organization to simultaneously manage and monitor multiple projects and tasks.
- Knowledge of TMUTCD, AASHTO “Green Book,” NACTO Design Guides, City of Austin Transportation Criteria Manual and Standard Specifications, and other relevant design documents and best practices.
- Knowledge of Synchro, MS Office, and ArcMap.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, plus eight (8) years of related experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer, including two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Licenses or Certifications:
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
