Junior Engineer - Land Development (Fixed-Term/Full-Time)

The position is fixed-term for up to three years.  Continued appointment in this position is contingent upon funding and job performance.  This is an “at will” position. 

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Public Works Department seeks a full time Junior Engineer to assist in the development and management of public works construction projects or programs through every phase, including mapping, drafting, reporting and field inspection.  We are seeking a candidate who is up to the challenge of working in a dynamic department. 

The position would assist the Land Development and Encroachment permitting divisions, which process more than 800 permits annually.  The Junior Engineer works with other department staff to review permits for land development standards, proper traffic control and vehicular/pedestrian safety, and coordinates private construction citywide.  Working closely with the supervising Associate Civil Engineer and the Community Development Department, the position will also assist in the review of planning and building permits for private construction and development work in the right-of-way. 

This position performs the following essential job duties:  (Including but not limited to the following)    

• Assists in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates pertaining to construction projects including but not limited to streets, sidewalks, driveways, drainage infrastructure, traffic signals, parking lots and other facilities in the right of way
• Researches and make recommendations on civil engineering issues/problems
• Reviews for City code compliance related to property improvements
• Regularly communicates with public about development projects
• Assists with plans and specifications and cost estimates for a variety of public works projects
• Participation in engineering inspection and survey activities
• Provides excellent customer service
