This position is responsible for supervising, training, and supporting Electric Production engineering and instrumentation & controls staff in order to ensure that electric production equipment, instrumentation, and controls are functioning in a safe, efficient, and cost effective manner. This position also performs project management, performance studies, and other tasks related to the operation of electric production equipment.
Essential Duties
Supervises and instructs the Instrumentation & Controls Technician/Operators, coordinating and integrating their work schedules with the maintenance planning system.
Supervises the Electric Production Engineer and co-ops/interns; assigns projects and provides technical assistance and guidance as needed.
Coordinates the I&C Tech/Operator apprenticeship program, including identifying appropriate training opportunities, evaluating apprentice performance, and tracking apprentice progress.
Coordinates the evaluation and maintenance of all electrical, instrumentation, environmental monitoring, and controls systems in the Electric Production Department.
Oversees the Engineering Change Management process within the department.
Works with the Operations and Maintenance Supervisors on large maintenance and improvement projects, providing technical and planning assistance; may function formally as project engineer.
Performs business risk evaluations of Electric Production department assets.
Conducts evaluations of plant systems and equipment operating performance and assists with troubleshooting performance degradation or failure.
Works with the Maintenance Supervisor to create and monitor maintenance and projects budgets within the Electric Production department.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
Interpersonal and supervisory skills necessary to manage the activities of a diverse group of employees and to work productively with all levels of organizational personnel.
Prior supervisory experience in a manufacturing, production, or utility setting.
Skill in communicating technical information and providing technical instruction to team members.
Ability to read and understand detailed drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
Experience/familiarity with P&IDs, ladder logic, process controls, and PID Controllers.
Ability to make complex mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
Mental ability to work on projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with periodic disruptions due to people, email, calls, operational concerns, etc. Frequent simultaneous handling of multiple projects is to be expected.
Preferred Qualifications
Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Michigan.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of operating a steam electric power plant and combustion turbine power plant.
Prior experience in electric utility engineering.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5, Applied Math – 5, Graphic Literacy – 5).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Periodic exposure to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment.
Exposure to extreme hot or cold weather.
