The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Geometric Design Laboratory's (GDL) mission is to support the Office of Safety Research & Development in research related to the geometric design of roadways and the impacts on safety. The GDL provides technical support to develop, maintain, and enhance tools for the data-driven safety analysis (DDSA) of highway geometric designs. This includes coordination of AASHTO’s Highway Safety Manual (HSM) with related tools, e.g., the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) (www.ihsdm.org; https://highways.dot.gov/safety/interactive-highway-safety-design-model/interactive-highway-safety-design-model-ihsdm).
What you’ll do:
The Transportation Research Engineer will contribute to the following as a key member of the GDL staff:
Research: Support Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) (www.ihsdm.org; https://highways.dot.gov/safety/interactive-highway-safety-design-model/interactive-highway-safety-design-model-ihsdm)-related research efforts; and conduct and support geometric design-related research.
Highway Safety Analysis Tools: Provide technical support to develop, maintain, and enhance tools for the data-driven safety analysis (DDSA) of highway geometric designs. This includes coordination of AASHTO’s Highway Safety Manual with related tools, e.g., IHSDM.
Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer: Support users of IHSDM and the HSM, including providing direct technical support to end users, assisting with development of training materials, and participating in various outreach activities (e.g., conducting webinars).
This individual shall have a minimum of a master’s degree in civil engineering, with a concentration in traffic/transportation engineering, and a minimum of 2 years of experience in highway safety and/or design research and/or practice. A Ph.D. in civil engineering, with a concentration in traffic/transportation engineering, may substitute for up to two years of experience. The individual shall possess strong knowledge of highway geometric design and its safety and operational effects, experience with developing and using transportation engineering software, experience in planning and conducting research studies, and strong oral and written communications skills.
The strongest candidates will have experience and/or knowledge in the following areas:
A strong understanding of basic highway design principles.
Highway safety analysis and related tools.
Data-Driven Safety Analysis (DDSA).
AASHTO’s Highway Safety Manual (HSM); particularly Part C (Predictive Methods).
FHWA’s Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM).
Safety/crash databases (e.g., FHWA’s Highway Safety Information System (HSIS); the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) data and Roadway Information Database (RID)).
Computer-aided roadway design.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data analysis.
Location: Turner- Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC)
Government contract: Applicants must be U.S. Citizen or an alien who has been a Permanent Resident for at least 3 years and has a valid work visa. A security clearance may be required.
