In collaboration with the leading energy company in Norway Equinor and the Academia programme, UiS is establishing a new professorship in Decision Driven Computational Engineering. The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Energy Resources.
The position will be closely tied to a new program on Computational Engineering starting in 2019. The candidate will teach, develop courses and conduct research on the development and application of computational models, including decision analytics, relevant to the production and transformation of energy resources. Our new staff member will use methods such as exploratory analysis of large data sets, decision analysis, operations research, network analysis, risk analysis, economic analysis and systems modeling. The candidate’s expertise should be applied to diverse decision and modeling challenges in energy resource management.
The professor is expected to play a leading role in research and research-based education in decision driven computational engineering in cooperation with the existing staff at the Department of Energy Resources. She or he is also expected to establish collaboration with relevant colleagues at other departments at UiS and within UiS’ strategic research areas.
Value creation requires good decision making. Good decisions rely on domain knowledge, relevant data, good models, and the ability to model. The challenge of being able to make good decisions in complex and uncertainty environments require skills within modeling. Relevant and useful models rely on both data analytics and domain skills. The job requires knowledge and experience in analyzing complex unstructured problems and apply the insight to make better decisions to improve e.g. efficiency, quality, and workflows. The professor should have competence and motivation for research in this area.
In particular, research competence in the following areas is regarded as relevant for the position:
- Decision analysis
- Computational engineering
- Data assimilation and exploratory analysis of large data sets
- Operations research including robust optimization
- Risk modelling analysis and management
- Statistics
- Systems engineering
- Industrial economics
- Energy resource engineering
Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact, with a long-term perspective and to be concentrated around basic challenges and enabling technologies with relevance and importance for applications and industry.
The department has strong relationships to Norwegian and international industry, with numerous joint research projects.
The research activities at the department rely mainly on external funding, and the development of educational programs may also receive external funding. The successful applicant is expected to engage extensively in applications for external research funding, e.g. from the Research Council of Norway, European research and educational agencies, the industry sector, and other available sources.
MSc and PhD candidates from the energy resource programs are expected to be competitive in an international job market. The professor will contribute toward the department’s educational profile and promote an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students and external stakeholders. Specifically, the professor is expected to teach one course of the department’s MSc program and a specialization course at MSc or PhD level. She or he should supervise MSc students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows.
In addition to research and education, the professor is expected to disseminate relevant parts of the research to a wider audience.
The professor is also expected to participate in the management of research, education and other relevant areas of activity in agreement with the head of department.
As a professor, you will primarily teach and supervise students at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level within the subject area, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research areas at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses.
You will also lead the development and use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research, as well as academic and artistic development work.

General information
Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific work and documented teaching competence. The committe will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.
If a large number of applications is received, it may be necessary to reject some applications before the associated documents are sent to the expert committee for assessment. This will apply to applicants who do not satisfy key qualification requirements.
Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

It is a prerequisite that the appointee has a residence which enables him or her to be present at/available to the academic community during ordinary working hours.
