The engineering intern assists the staff of the Private Engineering Services Division in the Department of Community Development. The intern is responsible primarily for site inspections and documenting observations but also assists in drafting, surveying, reviewing/marking plans, maintaining files and handling other projects as assigned.
Knowledge of applicable municipal codes, federal and state requirements, as well as standard construction practices.
Ability to use personal computers and associated applications including spreadsheets, word processing, AutoCAD and databases.
Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings and specifications.
Respond tactfully to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Speak and relate ideas to engineering staff.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include:
Excessive standing and walking during construction activities.
Moderate lifting and carrying of equipment, tools, etc. up to 60 pounds.
Moderate climbing on rough terrain, through excavated areas and trenches.
Frequent driving to and from work sites.
Surveying in the field.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
Making observations.
Communicating with others.
Reading and writing.
Sensory discrimination and attention to detail in construction zones.
Using a computer and reviewing engineering plans, plats and maps.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
